What is the Independent Mental Health Network?

IMHN is an organisation that represents a diverse community of past, current and future users of mental health services, as well as those with lived experiences of mental health. We are a member-led movement, with a number of local branches. Each branch works to improve the way that mental health is perceived, treated, recognised, and talked about. Membership is open to all that support IMHN’s aims. IMHN provides a safe space for people to confidentially share their needs and experiences of mental health services, and works to ensure that mental health support is effective and fit for purpose.

IMHN’s Mission Statement… “Promoting an effective voice to improve mental health services for all.”

Our belief… is that with one in four people being affected by mental health problems each year, it is vital that services are providing the best possible care and access for patients. We also believe that there needs to be more parity of esteem between mental and physical health, and that stigma surrounding mental illness must be challenged.

Our vision… is to have excellent and improved mental health services that listen to everyone who has used; is using or intending to use mental health services.

Our five values…

Inclusivity

Being open to all people with lived experience of mental health, regardless of their age, gender, race, sexuality, ability or religion.

Bravery

Speaking out, sharing our experiences and making sure our voices are heard.

Respectfulness

Listening to others’ mental health experiences without holding any judgement.

Determination

Ensuring mental health services meet the needs of users, and worthwhile change is created

Innovative

Creating lasting solutions for improving access to mental health services
